I had some time the other day, while waiting for an appointment, so I browsed through the gift shop and came across an interesting book. Turns out the book is not only interesting but informative and that I found it by chance makes it fun. The book is Food Rules, An Eater's Manual by Michael Pollan.
It's not a long book, just 140 pages divided into three sections. Part I What should I eat? (Eat food), Part II What kind of food should I eat? (Mostly plants) and Part III How should I eat? (Not too much).
This is not a diet book or a book promoting vegaterianism or any other specific diet practice. What it is trying to do is simplify todays eating habits. He uncomplicates what has gotten very complicated in modern times. Can you lose weight from reading this book? Probably since it is full of sound advice and practical and easy applications.
The best part of the book is it is very easy to read and you don't get bogged down in details. Not one chapter is longer than two pages and some are simply one line or two. Some of my favorites are, Chapter 7 Avoid food products containing ingredients that a third-grader cannot pronounce or Chapter 20 It's not food if it arrived through the window of your car [that one made me laugh out loud] Another is Chapter 36 Don't eat breakfast cereals that change the color of the milk.
I could go on and on but there are too many helpful and humorous chapters to quote here. The gist of the book is eat foods in their most natural form, as unprocessed as possible and unpackaged. Basically it is all common sense but until it is pointed out, things I hadn't thought about.
Michael Pollan has also written best sellers, In Defense of Food, which I am now reading and The Omnivore's Dilemma.
All lines taken directly from the book are in italics.

Is he also the one who wrote The Omnivore's Dilemma?
Oh duh, I just noticed you wrote that at the end. I read part of that one and liked it a lot.
FUNNY, my friend just suggested this book to me a few days ago! I resisted getting it because I have 8 million other books I need to find time to read. BUT, since it is such a short easy read, I'm all over this! I need to find one asap. Thanks!
i have read omnivores dilemna...pretty cool read...
Well I guess I'll have to go read it. . .
I have been a fan of Michael Pollen for years. My philosphy - you can eat anything you want IF you are willing to make it yourself.
I own that book :)
Now I'm curious and will have to look for it.
I have been BEGGING my husband when he goes shopping for me (I know...I am lucky there and I should just shut up now...) that he ONLY shop the perimeter of the store where all the "hunt and gather foods" are located. Funny, though, I don't remember hearing that Chips Ahoy were hunted OR Gathered!
Thanks for the recommendation
I've read his other two books and found them very interesting! This one looks good as well!
I need to pick up the books I have and read them.
Ugh. LAZY since I finished college last March 20th.
Yup - too much of the book learnin' for me! :0
Ohh, I might have to get that.
I've found this new philosophy, the simpler you eat, the better. I can't believe it took me this long to figure that crap out!
I'll be looking this up...thanx ;)
something tells me I've read an excerpt of In Defense of Food but now I can't remember what it was....
I'll need to look into it given your recommendation :-)
Shoot -- no more froot loops for me? :)
Oh well...
xo
Looks like a book I need to check out! I like the "dont eat what a third grader cant pronounce"...that has helped me in eliminating processed foods...and I feel so much better!
Now that's a book I can read - simple, and health-related!
Nah, I'm not going to read any more books about how to eat ever again! A little of what you fancy and a variety across the food groups is what I say. Did I mention half a glass of red wine every night?
I'm always watching my weight go up and down . it sounds like a book that i will check out thanks. rose
I need to eat better AND I like short chapters, so I'll keep my eye out for this book.
I read his last book, In Defense of Food, and found it so informative. Whenever you have the chance, google his interviews, he's quite low-key and interesting....
