Mat Kearney
My concert list gets longer every month. Each time I go to a gig I usually come away with a new band to follow. In most cases the opening bands are new to me and very enjoyable. On our last visit with British band Keane the opening act was Mat Kearney. I had just been introduced to Mat, musically, by my older daughter and was really enjoying his sound. He has two cds, Nothing Left to Lose and a newer one City of Black and White. I love them both but if I had to chose I would have to go with his first cd. I don't think there is a song on either that I skip.
Don't let this sway you but his first album has a great blend of song and rap. This is not gangsta or rap in any sense that you might think. You can understand what he is saying and the blend between the singing and rap in the song is fantastic. I have included a video of one of his rap songs below, you be the judge. He blends the melody in his songs very well. Along with his guitar playing and the rest of his band, he is a great artist.
Thanks again to Steven Anthony for the idea to spread the music.

i wouldn't call it rap. it's like spoken word really. when he sings it's very coldplay-ish. grab jams though
Thanks for the suggestion! This is good for people like me who get into musical ruts. (My Bee Gees album is starting to get a little worn out.)
I love Mat Kearny. It seems just like yesterday he was working on branching over from his christian lable to secular. He's amazing.
I'd heard of Keane AND Mat Kearney...but hadn't really thought to check them out. Kearney's early stuff makes for good gym music...upbeat but not angry. I'll have to get some...
And I spread the Powderfinger love at my Super Bowl party last night. Because really, that much awesome should not be kept under wraps.
LOVE HIM! and your taste in music ROCKS!
oh, love that. love me some spoken word...
I love hearing about new artists!
Thanks.

I love that you always pick the artists that aren't super popular, they are GREAT!! I love that Vampire Diaries song. :)
I love Mat Kearney! Have 2 cds and listen to them on my Ipod all the time!
I know what you mean by going to the concert and being blown away by the opening act. I went to see the Swell Season (Awesome) and Rachael Yamatata opened. I went and bought all 3 of her Cd's! You should check her out! You may also like Rocco De Lucca and the Burdens.
Love Love Love Him
I serve on my college's committee for booking entertainment. Thanks for the review...we'll keep him in mind!
i've been obsessed with mat kearney for almost seven years now before he was well known at all. he really is an amazing artist. a lot of people don't realize that his lyrics mainly center around his faith and beliefs which is really cool.
Have you tried Muse? Awesome
So great that you share the music, and this one I know - I love this guy, his music is so melodic and beatifully done. A real talent!
I love that. Thanks for sharing this great music!
Betty xx.
I'm not a fan of the rap part of it but I like the rest. I do like the rap aspect of some other bands though.
Hey, he's pretty good! Thanks.
