The Wonderous World of Social Networking

As bloggers I would say we are aware of social networking. Even before blogging my guess would be most of us, certainly I did, know a bit about the internet via facebook , myspace and now twitter.  There are other sites that people use to socialize such as reshouts and I sure many more I don't know but I find them better to promote my blog rather than socialize.

I started meeting people on the internet by joining a few forums,  on these forums were "like minded" people who you knew had similar interests. [a couple are listed on the left sidebar] I am sure I have written about it before but I went as far as England to meet some of the people I met on the internet. My initial reason for joining some forums was not to meet people but to find information about things/people that interested me... what happened was a complete surprise.

Since I started blogging and getting followers and readers I have meet even more great people. We have followed each other to facebook and twitter to name a few. I have become fast friends with a few of them. I think these friendships grow so fast because, as I have already said, "like mindedness".

Having said all that I have another little adventure ahead of me. In February I am off to meet some new-ish internet friends.  I am going to Indiana to meet up with Rush  We meet on a forum and have gotten together several times, she has been to Boston twice and this will be my third time to Indiana. There is no price on friendship and we always have a good time. Girls weekend extended version.

Despite the Patriots being unceremoniously knocked out of the playoffs we will put football aside and enjoy ourselves. Besides who knows what will happen between now and February. I am sure a blog will come of it all.

The Slippery Noodle [Indianapolis]

On my way to Indianapolis I am going to stay over in Cleveland for a couple of days and meet up with some blogger friends. Adam and his wife Jennifer have been gracious enough to let me to stay with them [well it was kind of on a dare] I said next time I go to Indy I would stop in Cleveland and they took me up on it.. Not sure they thought I really would or not. Reservations have been made and I am on my way. Kasey Crabtree also lives in Cleveland and I hope to hang out with her as well. All are bloggers and twitterers, social networking at its best. While in Cleveland I hope to eat some of the great food Adam blogs about and  visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Follow @acgercak@jmacgercak, and @KaseyCrabtree on twitter.

I'll let you know how it goes. Have you ever met up with people IRL that you have met on the internet? How did it go?

Ugh. I almost married one! We met back during the AOL days. I ended up moving to him and lived with him for a while. Didn't work out AT ALL. I so like the "OFF" button and it seemed to have been missing IRL. We're great friends now, though, so it ended up being a long run win.

Like your blog! Stopping by from SITS and hope you have a good day!

i apologize. i have met bloggers in real life before. i can happily say that they all ended well. i have not found dead people by me, i have not been questioned by the authorities as a result of my relationship with my blogger buddies, but then again, that could all change as soon as you come to town.

i can't wait to show you my city. I am working on an itinerary, because with two young children, as I have, it is important to make sure shit is planned!

I love the city Adam and I am easy to please. Been awhile since I have been around a baby.

I just don't do diapers. :)

Sounds like we're on the same brain wave, talking about our bloggy friends and internet connections! I am meeting a fellow blogger in a few weeks-she's coming to MN to go ice fishing(yeah, she's crazy). Can't wait to hear about your adventures!

I have met a few. My most memorable would be the girl who I "knew" on a site for 3 years before we met. I went to her house and was standing in her kitchen, having just got there, and my son, whom I was holding on my hip, had the MOST EXPLOSIVE diaper ever- poop shot up the back of his diaper, up and over his clothes and mine, and then splatted all over her kitchen floor.

Nice to meet you. LOL

Actually, she took it really well and it was like we'd known each other forever. And she was nice enough NOT to tell people this story.

I've met loads of people from forums in the past, and two bloggers so far, with plans to meet another next month.

I am forever in debt to the internet and social sites for many life long friends and *gasp* even my husband.

I love that you have maintained such a solid relationship with Rush - you are both awesome ladies.

So far I haven't met any bloggy friends in RL - although I know there are at least a few in the Seattle area. But anytime you're in my neck of the woods let me know! :)

I've met some great friends through Twitter and blogging.

We always differentiate IRL friends and twitter friends- but sometimes one becomes the other... and its priceless :)

Have fun meeting up with your friends!

I have met 5 bloggers and have talked to quite a few on the phone. I love it! I would do it all the time if I could.

I have never met a fellow blogger IRL however I am in Australia and since most of my bloggy friends live in the USA I am not really surprised :)

I do however love the fact that social networking has made me reconnect with old friends from my past who are now avid readers of my blog.

Have fun on your trip!

Hi from SITS! I have met a lot of internet friends. I met DH on match.com. There's a Corvette forum that DH is on and we get together with the people in our area from that group from time to time, and I'm on another forum with a local section and we get together too.

I love meeting people from the internet! What fun you will have.

Like you, I began my internet friendhips on forums and even started one of my own years ago back on MSN. All of my closest friends from there are now on Facebook with me and read my blog. I've also had the chance to meet several of them in person and it's just like old home week.

From there I moved to Myspace where I met so many dear friends, and from there to Blogger.

I have had many conversations with people in my day to day life who don't understand how you can be friends with someone over the internet, but I know you can. So I just leave it at "they don't understand" and continue to have fun :-)

What a life! It is ridiculous for ME to say to YOU "Have Fun". Similar to, well I can't think of a proper example, but if I could, it would be like someone very tense attempting to say something hopeful to someone already gregarious and friendly. Alright, so it is exactly like that.

Anyway, enjoy. Looking forward to details.

Have a fun adventure! I have always thought you and I would meet someday, living so close and all! Any time you feel like some "like minded" time, let me know!

I love how social networking helps connect us to like-minded people. It's great. All these really cool people that I'd never have met in real life!

Masala Chica said...

what fun. it sounds like you have met some great people! One area where I think meeting people on line is "iffy" is online dating. Because people can be super cool when you read about them and see their pictures but there is intangible that doesn't carry over sometimes in real life. this happened when I was single and dating (not recently so if hubby is reading this, calm down honey).

I did to plan to meet some of my followers in New York in Oct whilst I was there on a business trip, but some stuff came up and I could not extend.

I'd like to meet some of the folks who regularly comment on my blog- but we'll see!

You know I just got back from a blogging retreat. It's fun to meet folks IRL. Have a great time!

It is weird how friends are made sometimes. There are moments when I feel closer to my blogging friends than to those I have IRL.

I am meeting my first blog friend at the end of the month when Leland and I head to MN to do some ice fishing. I will be visiting Cathy from Antsy Pants and I am so excited!

I actually went to a blogging event here in Atlanta and it was uncomfortable..that being said its bc I didnt "know" any of them personally from blogging. I would love to meet some of the people I have developed friendships with over the past year. It would be a blast.

I'm not all into the whole social networking thing on the internet. I actually worked for a company who designed applications for facebook. I don't twitter or facebook or myspace. I only blog. It's all I have time for. If I did travel to someones city that I know from blogging, I'd totally visit.

I am meeting a fellow blogger IRL tomorrow for the first time---kinda nervous, but very excited. Going to Houston for the wedding of an old family friend, and said blogger happens to live there as well. Wish me luck! (do you know her? Lee from Headaches, Hormones, & Hotflashes?)
