HAPPY HALLOWEEN

I forgot all about this poem I had written..

Gifs

Gifs

Halloween's a night of ghouls,
When even adults can act like fools.

Dressed up in costumes meant to scare,
Make up, scars, nothing to spare.

Some people prefer the beauty look,
Don't want the kiddos to get too shook.

Gifs

Princesses, fairies, and a queen,
Glittery on the streets to be seen.

Goblins, vampires and monsters beware,
Ghosts and witches are in the air.

Parents who don't dress, need to peak,
To get the kids candy, on the sneak.

I don't sneak or need a costume,
A bag of candy is bought, for myself to consume.

Gifs

I guess if no one else will....

Bought myself some flowers yesterday. I think they are beautiful.

Happy halloween !!!

Can Anyone else be Pregnant?

Sent via BlackBerry by AT&T

I work in the blood bank of a large metropolitan medical center. It is also a Level I Trauma Center. We get all the types of traumas you read about, stabbings, shootings, car accidents, falls and any number of accidents. We have have an active bone marrow transplant unit, perform liver transplants, along with a cancer center and any number of clinics. All of which could require transfusion services. Oh yeah and an OR and patients in beds upstairs...

When someone who doesn't know learns I work at night in a hospital the first reaction is "are you a nurse?" Now I respect nurses, but they aren't the only people who work in a hospital. The next assumption when I tell people I work in a blood bank is "do you draw blood?" Again, I have respect for phlebotomists as well, I have been one myself, but four years of college is not required to draw blood. I am a Medical Technologist [Immunohematology]. Even with an active hospital we still work for outside clinics and medical groups... why not, gun shots don't happen everyday.

Ok now for the pregnant part....those samples you see in the picture are from the various clinics we service. Each one is probably a pregnant woman getting her prenatal work done. A few of that batch are patients or pre ops....we get piles of samples like this every day! Which brings me back to the title question... how many more people can be pregnant?

edit to add: I didn't mean to post the blog yesterday, Instead of hitting save I hit publish..when I noticed there were 5 comments, so I left it. I wanted to find more uses..thanks for the ones you all added.

Also... more exciting news, maybe only to me, but my Indiana friend is coming to Boston next weekend and we are going to see Rob Thomas and hang out in the city...

  7. cigarette lighter... ala concert light to hold up and sway

I'm no Pioneer Woman

This will be my life for the next four or so months. Stacks of wood, a dusty family room, hawling wood. Let me clarify that, my kids will be hauling the wood I might throw a log on the fire from time to time.

See the "problem" is we have an electric house. The heat that is. It is quiet and clean but expensive. It wasn't our first choice but our old house was sold and we needed to move. Other than electric heat it has what we needed. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms a family room and two car garage (not that we park in it in the summer)

We bought and like it. Nice quiet neighborhood, which is important since I sleep during the day.
We bought a wood stove insert and it is great. Heats the downstairs and the upstairs sort of, but the one stipulation is I don't chop and haul. I am not a pioneer woman

It's NOT YOUR FAULT.....

If this title looks familiar it is because I borrowed it from Vodka Mom. She has an important message on her blog today and I felt it was so important I asked if I could put the link on my blog. She readily agreed.

Stalking is not something to fool around with and it certainly isn't to be considered flattering. If you think someone following your every move and communication is cool or special, think twice because it can turn bad very quickly. We have all seen news reports about young girls, mostly, getting harmed or killed by someone that "loved" them.

I am not trying to be unduely harsh or scare anyone, I just want everyone to read this blog and take it to heart. If you have teen,  or young adult daughters just learning their way in life these facts could save their life. Of course stalking could happen to anyone but as an adult I think most of us would know what to do...our youngster may not. Of course men/boys can be the subject of a stalker as well, and please those parents need to heed these warning as well...

Now run don't walk and read this post on  Vodka Mom

It's my party.........

Happy Birthday

Today is my birthday, and I am not so thrilled about it. I have to work this weekend and it is raining and well I just don't want anymore birthdays. Sure I know the options are worse and I do appreciate my life but the number.....hurts. Yes I know the expression, age is only a number but have you ever noticed the people saying it are always younger? What do they know? I don't "feel" my age in my head, my mind. But the body..well yes it does a lot of times. It was hard enough turning 50 last year, but being 50 isn't as bad as being IN your 50's....

I tried to write myself a poem but I only got two verses and it was lame so I am recycling the one I wrote last year, most of you weren't around then so it will be new... I just made a couple of changes.

So today is my birthday,
It is finally here.
Been a long wait,
It took a whole year.

Do I feel different?
I don't I admit.
Maybe now my mind settles,
Stops thinking all shit.

Stops worrying about age,
It's only a number.
Going on as usual,
And awakes from its slumber.

I am glad the day got here,
Been dreading it for so long.
But it's just another date,
I can now be strong.

50  51 is here
And I'm getting the knack.
Now on to 51 52
Look out - Laura's back on track.

Unfinished Business..Awards and What's for dinner

Ok, it is Wednesday and I just caught up with Tuesdays blogs...come on people take a vacation so I can catch up. I really like to read all those I follow but somedays I just can't. Please take pity on me and don't think I don't care because I do. I try to comment on them all. There are so many great ones to read and so little time. The guy blogs are the best to follow since most don't update daily...a method to my madness. I have also become addicted to Tetris, but more on that later.

Other blog business... I have received a couple more awards... you guys/gals rock. And I can't say enough how flattered I am, seriously.

JennyMac at Let's have a cocktali...  has awarded me the Honest Scrap (see sidebar >> )

If I am nothing, I am honest so I do appreciate this award. Jenny was one of the first blogs I followed and she has been with me for a long time so I am extra honored. ( I am not passing this one on at this time as most of my faves have this award already. I would love to see some "10 things about me lists" they are fascinating )

I recently posted 10 things you didn't know about me so bear with me as I try to think of 10 more.....

1- I am an awesome and cool mom according to my kids cuz I play video games and go to concerts. (no I didn't pay them)

2- My favorite food is peanut butter, is that considered a food.. should be a food group.

3- I love my BlackBerry.. opps you know that already.

4- I once had a poem published in a local paper..see the end of this blog

5- Enough about me...I'm bored already

The last award comes from Tamela at A Brunette Making it One Day at a Time

Dragon Loyalty Award

How cool is that award.. love the picture.

Rules are the usual, give credit and pass it on to 3-10 loyal readers/bloggers.

Sooooo, and drum roll please.

My husband just called, as he does most days, and asks what's for dinner? How would I know, I rarely ever cook it, besides I need to go grocery shopping. I think he just deludes himself and hopes one day I will say. "I have a roast in the oven, the potatoes are boiling and I am just finishing a beautiful salad. Oh and I made a key lime pie".......... ok you can all stop laughing now...

Why I Love and Hate Technology

As most of you know I love my gadgets, especially my BlackBerry. It keeps me in constant touch with all those I want too and don't want to stay in touch. My emails come straight to the phone and I have twitter and Facebook happily installed.

This Foxtrot cartoon is so true it's funny. I can't say how many times I have been texted or texted one of the kids when we are all in the house together. I just figure it is the modern day intercom system. The only time it really annoys me is when they are arguing with me via text, then I stop texting... my favorite is returning my daughters text and telling her if she wants to talk come and see me.. her reply.. "but you'll yell at me"....smart girl.

While I was away last weekend [no kids and husband remember] I was able to keep tabs on the kids.....well this can be a double edged sword. One morning I got a flurry of texts and phone calls from the youngest daughter, primarily complaining about her father. Apparently they were disagreeing about something, I don't even remember what. Then the oldest called because she couldn't find the can opener...wtf. It is an electric one how does that get lost... Guess what? We still haven't found it.

Of course my point is, how the hell am I supposed to know where things are when I am not even in the house? Ok perhaps I might remember moving something or seeing it somewhere but please spare me the nagging from afar. Was anyone bleeding or broken? Yes? then you can call. Wanna say "miss you mom" then you can call. [didn't get of either]

When I was in England last December I got calls, "where's my coat?" No shit, and I figure she had worn it a few times since I had left.

I am a horrible sleeper and one night while I was on the pc in the UK I got to talk on MSN instant messaging with my daughter [US is 5 hours behind]... now that is cool and it was nice to catch up.

I got a call from the school nurse about some form I needed to fill out.. when I told her I would get back to her when I returned to the US she couldn't believe she had called England.

The following is a true text conversation that happened while I was in Indiana

Me to Rush: Um I broke the bed [I stayed in Rush's room and she stayed upstairs in her daughter's]

Rush: What the bed broke?

Me: Yeah the bed broke

Rush: I'll be right there.......

Gotta love the BlackBerry.

Pink, blue, blond and brown

My daughter colored her hair.....again. She did it herself. She colors it often enough I am not sure the true color, brown I think. [pretty sure] I like it.

What do you think?

Chat-eaux, the place to be.

My life on the internet has been varied and interesting. I used to play mostly on line games and shop on Amazon.com or ebay. Eventually I discovered forums. I joined a few of various topics and sizes. All had a theme to them, be it a fan site or a site dedicated to a particular subject. These sites were great for the most part and I met some of the best friends a person could want. I have also had some disappointing experiences on these sites as well. One of "problems" being none of them covered all my needs.

There was no place to just "hang out" and chat. That brings me to the banner you see at the top of the post. Chat-eaux.com is a site started by some of these great friends. Not finding the complete forum on the world wide web either, they decided to start their own. Chat-eaux.com is a site that has topic specific areas and general chat areas.

I have included a couple of screen shots to show you the lay out and some of the topics included. There are even more topics than what is shown. [have to leave some surprises]. As you can see the site is set up like a .....well a Chateau. There are floors and rooms, each with different themes. There are topics for everyone. If you don't see one you are interested in, start a thread or ask one of the administrators or moderators to start it for you.

There are even podcasts being included and the first, an introduction to the site and some of the members, can be heard here. Notice the accents, our members are from all over the world. Our podcast guru is brilliant and talented. If you are interested he is your go to guy and a wealth of knowledge.

The site is geared for anyone from young adult to .... older. It is well moderated so language is being kept mostly clean and off color topics and undesirable subjects are kept to a minimum.

So...... come and check us out. Get in on the ground floor [pun intended] Be a founding member and bring your friends.

And for a bit of fun, anyone who can tell me what my user name is will get a 500 point award. But you must register [which is an automatic 100 points] and tell me by private message or a comment on my profile. Make sure to identify yourself and that you are a blogger friend or reader...

$40 and a Cab ride home.....

So Saturday after the casino adventure we relaxed around the house and had a nice breakfast. It was a bit frustrating as well since the internet was still down. Luckily we have BlackBerrys and we were able to keep up with our emails and texts etc. Funny thing Rush and I still text each other even though we may be in the same house. She has a big house and I am never sure where she is, so instead of hollering I text her... hey whatever works.

We got the internet back in the afternoon sometime and I managed to post and catch up on most of the many blogs I read. If I didn't read or comment on some that I usually do I apologize and hope to keep up now I am back home.

We drove into Indianapolis and headed to PF Chang's not Marc Pi's as I said in my last blog. It was about 8pm when we got there but still had to wait. After 1 1/2 of the best martini's we have ever had we got a seat at the bar.  We had some lovely appetizers and meal. Another martini and some nice conversation with the bartender and some fellow diners. [pictures are on my camera will post later]

We took a cab to the next place since it was getting late and we decided to go to The Slippery Noodle abadonning the idea of Nicky Blanes for some live music and a more lively atmosphere. It turns out it is the oldest bar in Indiana. Cool..  There were two bands, a blues band in the front area and a more rock band in the back area. We moved to the back bar and found a table and had a couple of drinks with raspberry vodka... they were different but ok. We soon graduated to the Buttery Nipples again. We had a couple upstairs and then moved downstairs to watch the other band. A gentleman from Texas bought us a round of Buttery Nipples to show that hospitality isn't gone...OK... I'll take it.

The next guy we sat near had no interest in buying us any drinks at all...he was a bit stiff and quiet. We had a couple more shots and bought some official Slippery Noodle shot glasses. They are great, nice heavy "real" shot glasses.

Rush hailed us a cab out side and we relaxed on the way home...well I relaxed asleep and Rush gave the driver the directions to her house...she did wake me up to pay.... sheesh... It was a great night with great company.

The next morning was more relaxing and I must admit I snuck in a couple of short naps. Rushs sister kindly drove us back to Indy the next day to pick up the car. With the parking fee paid we went to the mall and Rush treated me to lunch and I counted all the Colts shirts invading my space..eekkk.

Home for a relaxing evening and we enjoyed a nice roast with carrots and potatoes and some yummy snacks while we watched the NE Patriots lose and the Indy Colts win... Ok I guess she is the hostess after all.

Monday morning was early and we had to head to the airport for my trip home. It was sad as we don't get to see each other often, but it is always nice to go home. I am back to work tonight and the grind begins again.

Love you Rush xx

I Threw a Matchbook at the Bartender.......

I have had a lovely trip in Indiana so far. As Rush met me at the airport and went to give me a hug she hung a Colts scarf around my neck. I am still trying to figure out how to get it home and stay alive.. My husband is a diehard New England Patriots fan.... he said it was raining here because God hates the Colts...funny guy.

We spend a nice quiet day at her house and after lunch and a too short nap we went to eat at Bravo Cucina Italiana The eggplant parmagania was delicious as was the Espresso Martini.

Espresso Martini and Rasberrytini

Following a scary-ish drive through back streets and drying corn fields we arrived at Indiana Live my very first trip to a Casino. It was like going to Santa's Wonderland when I walked inside, all the lights and bells and whistles. Fascinating. Our first stop however was a bar [go figure] and we asked for a Hypnotic Martini and an X rated Fusion Martini....the waitress came back saying they didn't know how to make them or charge for them. Rush explained and when we got our drinks we were appalled. The poor waitress [who was just adorable] felt so bad and even embarassed to serve them.  We drank them and moved along. We went into a restaurant at the casino and the manager came over and we had a nice chat about the disasterous drinks we just had and we ordered our drinks again. I went for the standard "extra dry Grey Goose Martini" and Rush had a real "Hypnotic Martini" in fact we each had two.

Martini and a Hypnotic

We left happy and wandered some more looking for "Wheel of Fortune" we found the $1 ones and I put in $20 and left with $39 and Rush put in $40 and left with $69.  We found some .25 "Wheel of Fortune" games and played some more. I left with $42 and Rush broke even with $40. It may sound simple but I had a blast. We decided to go back to the original bar [you would think we would learn] and sat at the bar. The band was ok.. she segued from Miley Cyrus to Led Zep covers..bizarre. We sat at the bar some more and still no attention from the bartender...she seemed engrossed in the band...whatever. I said to Rush I should throw some matches at her [there were baskets full on the bar] and well......I did. I didn't hit her but the match book did sail in front of her eyes and when she turned to look I flagged her down. And we ordered Buttery Nipples. Shot that came in orange juice glasses. I did apologize to her explaining I had try to get her attention by waving [truth] but she didnt see and the band was to loud to holler to her.

It was great fun, my only complaint is all the smoking. For the most part it is bearable but the lady next to me at "Wheel of Fortune" smoked and the ashtray was right next to me...yuck.

We even remembered our way home [I told Rush there was no way I was getting out of the car in this wilderness] and I slep very well.

We woke up to no internet still [we realized when we got home it was out] and it wasn't fixed until afternoon. For two internet addicted ladies that was pure torture...thank goodness for BlackBerrys.
It was a quiet day at home for the most part but we are now drinking some vodka punch and heading out to dinner at Marc Pi's and then to Nicky Blane's Martini Bar [no worries, as if....we are cabbing it home]

More to follow............

Don't Worry, [as if..]

Just one more nap literally before I get on a plane to Indianapolis and a long weekend with my girlfriend. I will have a short sleep and then work until 5am. My husband is picking me up from work with the car loaded and then I am off to Boston's Logan Airport and Indiana.

There will be no kids or husbands for three days. I don't do girls night out, I do weekends. [for those of you with young children, your time will come] She has bought the snacks, the vodka and the vodka. Drink and forget the world for a few hours... you bet. I have a great life for the most part, but we all have "shit" and leaving it behind is appealing.

So if you don't hear from me for a few days, don't worry [as if..] and if I don't comment on your blog, don't worry [as if..] I am having fun. I will be back, don't worry [as if..] and hopefully with some great blog material. [as if..]

bon voyage......

Honest Scrap.....10 things about me

Apparently as part of the Honest Scrap award you are supposed to list 10 things about yourself. I must have missed that detail so I am going to do it now.... hang on, I am a most fascinating woman.......

1- I lived in England for a total of 7 years as a child. My dad was in the Air Force and did two tours. The first I was a baby and subsequently learned how to talk British first. When we returned to the US we lived in the UP of Michigan, and I mean upper. My teacher didn't like my accent and forced it out of me but when we went back I would switch back and forth... I was Britsh/US bilingual lol..

2- I was a chemisty major in college. Total science nerd.

3- I have worked in a Blood Bank for 23 years. People think it is gross to work with blood but all the blood I see is in tubes and bags. I never [rarely] see the patients receiving the blood and I never see the traumas in the ER. I obviously know what is going on if a patient is taking multiple units of blood. I did see one guy once who's leg had been cut off when he was hit by a train..that WAS gross.

4- My hobby is going to concerts. I love live gigs. I love to share music with people and I love it when I am introduced to new music. I have traveled as far as Mexico City to see a concert [Robbie Williams]

5- Gadgets are my crack. I love having the latest phone especially. My ipod is as precious to me as my wallet [has no money in it anyway] It was Christmas Day in May when I bought my MacBook. You get the point.

6- Traveling would be my second hobby....if I could afford it. I went to the UK last December by myself and met a lot of internet friends. It was a blast. I have done minimal traveling in the US. Would like to do more.

7- I have two daughters. One is 20 and a junior in college studying History. She went to a vocational high school and has a certificate in cabinet making. My youngest is 15 and a sophomore in the local high school. She loves writing and is learning to play the electric guitar.

8- I hate to drive. If my husband is with me he drives and if my oldest is with me she drives. In fact sometimes she drives me around if I am too tired to drive. Working nights takes its toll. If I had my way I would have a big Lincoln Towncar and a hunky driver...... as if...

9- Housework and cooking are totally not my bag. I can do them and do them well but why if someone else will. My husband does most of the cooking and even cleans. My share is done by my daughters, namely my oldest... I pay them. They want extra money so why not.

10- Perhaps this belongs with number 5 but I have my own NintendoDS. I enjoy video games. When we first got our PS 2 one Christmas I played until 3 in the morning. I couldn't figure out how to save the game so I didn't want to quit the game. My favorites being Ratchet and Clank and Jax and Daxter. On the DS I like to play MahJong and word games.

So there you go.. a few tidbits about me...

Blog Awards Part 3...I think.... Part 2

Thank you The Wannabe Wahm for reminding me that I had forgotten that you had given me an award. It means no less to me, honest.

I have one more blogger that I want to give it to. I have just discovered his blog but I enjoy reading it and I have become loyal to it....and I know he will be loyal to mine [nothing like a bit of bibery is there]

So make sure your visit JP at JP's.

I read a lot of Mommy blogs and blogs written by woman so I do enjoy reading the man's side of thing... they are still wrong of course but fun none the less.

Sorry about two posts in one day but had to be done...now go read the other if you haven't already and thanks for all the great comments.

Blog Awards Part 3...I think

This is almost embarrassing, receiving all these awards. Don't get me wrong I love it and will accept all graciously and willingly it is just so unexpected. I have four to post and not to brag but I think there is another that I have forgotten about. If you gave me one recently and I haven't posted it please forgive me and send me an email so I can give your site the recognition it deserve as well.

The first one was given to me by Living in France . I love this one as it is a loyalty award. I like to think I am loyal...with so many great blogs out there I try to read them all. Thank you MiMi.

I would like to pass this on to some of my most loyal blogger friends. I have so many I have drawn names from a hat so as not to offend anyone.

JennyMac Let's have a cocktail... I would imagine she already has this award but she is none the less deserving.

Lisa Smell the Coffee Lisa another that probably has the award but giving it to her again any way

Speaking from the Crib loyal and very funny.

The next award comes from Betty Manousos:cutand-dry.blogspot.com at CUT AND DRY

The rules of the award are:

Accept the award, post it on your blog together with the
name of the person who has granted the award,
and his or her blog link.
Pass the award to fifteen other blogs that you've
newly discovered, remenber to contact the bloggers
to let them know they have been chosen for this award.
So, the "One Lovely Blog Award"- goes to:

I apologize but I don't have 15 blogs to give it too...but I have found several new [to me at least] blogs I have been reading lately.

Blogstalker I love the name.

Will at Father & Other Common Terrors, he's a brand new father and I love the blogs.

Jules at Just Jules, I love her honesty and caring blog.

Daddy Scratches who's blog is diverse and always interesting.

The third award is the I Give Good Blog Award from Hot Piece of Sass. The only requirement is to pass it along to deserving bloggers.

Carma Sez, has a great blog. How can you not love someone whos quest is cheese balls.

Kel at Hesitant Housewife, she is fairly new to me but how can you resist the name of her blog.

The final award is from Rocky Mountain Momoirs. Her blog is new to me and I have been enjoying it.

I'd like to practice some nepotism and give this award to my daughters.

Something about nothing & Everything Else her spelling isn't the best but I think she is funny. She wrote a lovely blog about me :) so how can I reist.

Why Me? is written by my younger daughter. She doesn't post very often but has written some lovely poems.

That about covers this session of award giving... Thank you again for the accolades and enjoy the blogs I have posted.

Choose an Identity

I always get a kick out of the blog comment window, where it says "Choose an Identity". As you see mine is already in there since I am logged in.... but what if I want to choOse another identity, what would I choose?

Catherine Zeta Jones perhaps, she is beautiful and younger. Not sure I want to be married to Michael Douglas.

Heidi Klum, I think she is one of the most beautiful woman on the planet. Again do I want to be married to Seal. He sings nice enough but ...

Maybe a powerful woman like Oprah...not for a billion dollars. Something about her really, really annoys me. [I do know what annoys me but that is for another day]

Does beauty even have to be part of it? Well if I am getting to choose, yes.

Money? Sure I would like to know what it is like to be rich. It may not bring you happiness but I would like to give it a try. [at least get the kids through college]

Sports figure? Maybe. I would like to get fit. Politician? Hmmm not so much. Pop star, literary genius, scientist, astronaut, stripper, hit man the possiblities are endless.

Now when that window comes up for you to leave me a comment, and you are going too. Let me know ... who do you choose?

Why Do Woman Change? Part 2

I love the comments I have received following my last blog. Most of the changes people mentioned were things I hadn't considered. Of course we all change and mature over our lives, good and bad, and hopefully the people in our lives come along. But...and there always is one, it seems to me that I have talked to countless men who say their wives changes are not for the better. They "forget" about the fun they had in their lives before they had children. Some of these men are being selfish of course, and some I think exagerate. A lot fuss that their wives have no interest in sex after the babies are born, and I don't mean immediately after but  years after. I think if men knew half of how their wives felt about sex they would be surprised, communication is key but not always successful. This is probably best a seperate blog... lol  We all whine about our spouses at one time or another, me being no exception and mine was great about diapers and all those baby chores. He still is, cooking and cleaning and doing the "man" things, I have been lucky.

I have never had the luxury of being a SAHM. Luxury you laugh I am sure, but for some one who works full time [and always has] and still has the wife and mother chores [ok I probably have less than others] staying home sounds wonderful. I would expect to do more of the household chores if I didn't work, or worked less but that has not been my fate and luckily have a successful job and a family that works together, for the most part...again perhaps a seperate blog. [writes down for future topics]

Have I changed since having kids, of course I have, but as my kids have gotten older and more self sufficient I am taking back some of the focus. If you have been reading my blog for any time you can see my daughters and I do a lot of things together. We enjoy each others company. It is great to have children that don't mind being seen with me.. it makes me proud in fact.

But....yep another. I also relish my own time and interests as well. No I don't go out "partying" like I used too [and don't necessarily want to] and things have to be planned more, but I will not give up on myself. Some may call that selfish I call it required nurturing. What is good for one person may not be for another, or necessary, I have no problem with that. I have had heated discussions about it with people in fact. I say what ever floats your boat .... whatever works for you and your family.

As for my therapist wanting to go off without his wife, I do think there was some kidding on his part. No I don't know him other than as my therapist and the chat we have at that time but if he and his buddy want to go off after dinner and a show I see no problem. Pick up a hooker, yes a problem.

Have I made sacrifices for my kids, plenty. I have always worked off shifts to accomadate schedules, and require less day care. As the day care became impossible I went to the night shift. That wasn't so much a chore because I do like it, except for the no sleep part and hey sleep is over  rated anyway. Co-workers ask why I don't take a day job since the kids are older. That is why I don't, I think the kids probably need me more now and I want to know where they are after school and be available if needed. I think one of the biggest sacrifices has probably been my marriage. My husband and I don't see each other as much as some couples since we work opposite shifts and sometimes don't have a lot to say to each other. And yes this concerns me, what will it be like when the children are out of the house, will there still be an "us".

I have digressed here a bit and gone from change to sacrifice. Different topics but related in my opinion. They both go hand in hand with children. I would sacrifice anything for my girls and have, I have also changed. As others have mentioned they have made me a more caring and compassionate person. I never knew I had so much capacity to love until I held them in my arms for the first time. Have I changed in any ways I am not thrilled about...probably... I have less patience sometimes and and my temper gets the best of me once in awhile but little has changed that is a core part of me. Set aside perhaps, for the time being, but still there.

But the question, have I changed because of children, yes, but now that I am 50, 51 this month in fact [did I really just admit that out loud] I refuse to let life pass me by. I am fortunate to be able to afford a few things in life and I will take advantage of that fact and hopefully the daughters and the husband will come along for the ride...... if not I'll wave as I pass on the highway and send a postcard with my love, which never changes.

Why Do Woman Change?

Physical therapy is my life these days it seems. I have been going twice a week for a couple of months now. I usually go right after work when I am tired, makes no sense I suppose but if I wait until later I fall asleep and forget. It is helping the arthritic knee by strengthening the muscles. I start by riding the stationary bike for 10 minutes and then the "Physical Terrorists", their words not mine, work me over. There are two that work with me. K is good but grumpy a lot. And POM is funny and actually a bit better I think. He changes up the work out so it isn't boring. I bike again after the therapy as well. (arrow in above picture is "my" bike) I have even managed to lose a few pounds.

POM and his wife and another couple are going to NYC this weekend for some fun and time away from their kids. Seems they can only stay away one night since the kids are younger. He says he hopes they go off in separate groups, the wives one way the men another. Seems the wife is "different" since they have had kids. He wasn't complaining so much as stating a fact. I don't get it myself. Sure you have to be responsible and act appropriately in front of the kids but when away...why? I told him if I was there I would be off with the men. I refuse to change who I am for anything. Yes my kids come first and their care and welfare are paramount to me but I am still myself.

I am not saying, "let's get drunk and be fools", although that can be fun when you are where no one knows your name, but loosen up and relax. Of course we each loosen up in our own ways and yes some of my interests have changed over the years but the basic me is the same.

Now of course there are changes that are positive, addictions and such are worth correcting. I am trying to lose the extra weight I have gained over the years and I would like to be more patient, but the me inside is mostly the same. Perhaps I am rambling a bit now but what I am trying to say, stay who you are.

This blog has taken a direction I was not expecting at all.... love it really. Love getting out what is in my head (and I didn't even have to rhyme). Can't wait to hear about my therapists NYC adventures. Should be a laugh for our next session and I must admit it does make the pain he inflicts at more bearable.

My next adventure is next weekend. I am flying out to Indianapolis to visit a girlfriend for the weekend. There will be no kids or husbands. Relaxing and "being ourselves" are the only things on the menu. A few martinis too I would imagine and I for one can not wait. Not sure there will be pictures I can post but I am sure there will be blog material.

So my question for you out there, woman and men, how have you changed since your children were born? Have you changed, have your interests changed?

New York City...on a boat

New York City has become a favorite place of mine and I have only been there twice. There is so much to keep you interested and so much to see just walking down the street, I can't wait to go back. I suppose if you were born and raised there it might not fascinate you as much but no matter, I am easily entertained.

My daughter, K and I left bright and early last Saturday and after an uneventful drive arrived at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum around noon time. Parking was only $30 (gasp) but it was a short walk to the ship and we could even see the car from the deck. The line to get into the museum was a bit long but since it was Saturday and free museum day we expected it. Once on the ship there was plenty of room to roam around and look at every thing.

Daughter K and myself on deck of the Intrepid

There was a short wait to go up the "tower" but it moved quickly and was worth the wait. The stairs coming down were VERY steep and a bit scary. My knee didn't care for it much but oh well. On the deck of the Intrepid were many different airplanes, spanning the years and from a few countries. I appologize that I cannot tell you what kind of airplanes they are but enjoy the pictures.

The main deck also housed some planes and helicopters. It was interesting how the wings could fold up to fit inside. There were many men looking around that had been on the Intrepid and had interesting stories. There are also a few short films that you can watch that are fascinating. One details the history of the ship and other recount some of the battles told by members of the crew. Those were particularly moving.

After touring the ship we stood in a long line to go aboard the submarine, The Growler. It was worth the wait. The technology is fascinating to see as it is certainly "old fashioned". It is unbelievable how cramped the space is and what sacrifices the men went through to serve on a sub.

torpedoes I think

There is also a British Airlines SST parked on the dock and part of the museum. We did have a look at it but opted not to wait to go on board. It was smaller than I thought it would be. At this point we had been on board over three hours and were tiring out. (I was at least)

We headed to the hotel and after getting a bit lost in Manhattan found our way and relaxed for a bit in our room. It was nice enough although after several swaps of remote controls we never did get the tv to work and the phone by the bed had to be swapped out as it didn't work properly either. I did "complain" at check out, asked for compensation asn was give 15% off which about covered the tax. (yikes)

We found a nice shushi place for dinner Sushi Damo and had Tuna Tataki and Scallop roll and tempura ship then wandered off to explore. Chocolate covered strawberries was our dessert on the go and very yummy. We went into a Coach flagship store and drooled over the purses, wallets and shoes. Why couldn't I be rich? We wandered more and headed to Times Square. It is like being a kid with all the lights and people, very cool. (can you tell I live in suburbia) We spent hours in the M&M store that night and again the next day.

That evening we went to a comedy show Broadway Comedy Club which was very funny. We left after the show to be greeted by a fine drizzle and headed back to the hotel on foot. We hadn't gone far when I felt something squishy under my foot and .... you guessed it .... I fell. At least it wasn't on my "bad" knee and now I have matching skinned knees. After I got up and looked at what I stepped on I had to laugh, it was a banana peel. Pratfall is my middle name. Two men behind us kicked it off to the curb hopefully saving someone else from the same fate. There was also another witness to my gracefulness, and he kindly commented "I do that all the time". It was a homeless man huddled up next to the building. He seemed to quite enjoy my mishap. Nice to know I have something in common with the homeless of NYC.

We stopped at a shop and bought some desserts (stores are open forever it seems) and had a midnight snack in the room before crashing and sleeping very well..... although that is a matter of opinion. Apparently I woke my daughter by snoring... I blame it on the cold.

The next morning it was raining even harder but we wrapped up and walked a million blocks to find Dylan's Candy Bar, owned by Dylan Lauren daughter of Ralph Lauren. My daughter had seen it on tv so we thought we would have a look.

I wanted to go to Ground Zero but it was on the other end of Manhattan and with the rain decided to wait for another day and took a cab back to Times Square. I did manage to get some, very little, Christmas shopping done and after taking another cab back to the hotel we headed back home. I must add, be sure to speak clearly to the cabbies. The last one thought I said W 47th Street but we wanted W 57th Street. He did turn off the meter early so I guess it was okay. We wanted to find the Cash Cab [link] but alas had no luck.

Can't wait to go back..
